1. Scope of this Policy

This Privacy Policy applies to information collected through our Website and related online services in the United States and Canada. We strive to comply with relevant U.S. laws (including the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act “COPPA”) and Canadian laws (including the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act “PIPEDA” and substantially similar provincial laws).

2. Information We Collect

Parent/Guardian Registration

• When you register an account, we collect your name and email address.
• No birthdate, age, or address is collected.

Child Account Creation

• Parents may create child accounts by providing the student’s name and a username.
• The name identifies the student within the parent’s account and on their own pages; the username is what the student signs in with, and is chosen by the parent.
• Parents also provide the student’s grade and the division (country) they compete in. These decide which packs, subjects and sets are offered.
• We do not collect an email address, school, city, or state for a child account.
• We do not collect or require any additional personal information about children (e.g., birthdate or age).

Payment Information

• Payments are processed via Stripe; we do not store payment details.

Automatically Collected Data

• We collect limited technical information such as IP address, device type, and browser type solely for internal operations, including system diagnostics, security, and error logging. This data is not used to identify individual users, is not combined with personal information, and is retained only for a short period.
• We use a temporary session cookie to keep users logged in while they use the Website. This cookie does not contain personal information, expires after a short period of inactivity, and is deleted along with the related session data. No cookies are used for advertising, tracking, or behavioral profiling.

3. How We Use Your Information

• To manage user accounts via AWS Cognito.
• To deliver quiz materials and improve Website performance.
• To send notifications related to account management and updates.
• To comply with legal obligations and protect our rights.

4. Children's Privacy (COPPA Compliance)

• Limited Data Collection: We collect only the student’s name, a username chosen by the parent, the student’s grade, and the division (country) they compete in. We do not collect an email address, school, city, or state for a child account.
• Use of Data: The name and username are used only to identify the student within the parent’s account and to let the student sign in. A child account has no email address, so a student’s password is reset by their parent from the parent dashboard rather than by email. Grade and division are used to decide which packs, subjects and sets are offered.
• Parental Control: Parents or guardians must create their own account first and then add child accounts. They can review, modify, or delete their child’s account information at any time by logging into the parent dashboard or contacting us directly.
• No Additional Information: We do not collect or request other personal information about children, such as last name, birthdate, or age.
• Practice Data Handling: Practice results are stored for the competition season, because progress tracking and spaced repetition decide when to show a question again from how the student answered it before. They are deleted at the end of the season (see Data Retention below).
• No Persistent Tracking: We do not maintain persistent profiles of children or track their behavior across sessions or services.
• Parental Consent: By creating a child account, parents explicitly consent to:
  • Storage of practice results for the competition season,
  • Association of practice results with the child’s account credentials, and
  • Enabling limited personalization features (e.g., progress tracking) if applicable.

5. Disclosure of Information

• We do not sell or rent personal information to third parties for marketing or any other purpose.
• Data is shared with AWS (authentication) and Stripe (payments) as necessary.
• Information may be disclosed if required by law.

6. Parental Rights and Choices

• Parents can access and update their own account information and their child’s login details through the parent dashboard.
• Marketing emails can be unsubscribed at any time.

7. Data Retention

• Practice Results: Practice results are retained for the competition season. They are what progress tracking and spaced repetition are built on: the service decides when to show a question again from how the student has answered it before, so a result has to outlive the sitting it came from. Results are deleted at the end of the season.
• Account Information: Parent and student accounts remain active during the competition season. All user data is deleted at the end of each competition season.

8. Data Security

We implement reasonable administrative, technical, and physical security measures to protect the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of your information. These measures include secure hosting environments, encryption of data in transit (HTTPS), and strict access controls. While we endeavor to safeguard information, no security system is impenetrable, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

9. AI and Machine Learning

• Data Privacy: No personal data or user information is ever shared with third-party AI providers.
• No Training on User Data: User data is not used to train our AI models.
• Purpose of AI Use: AI and machine learning are applied solely to enhance the learning experience, including presenting practice questions, generating study materials, and identifying weak areas to provide personalized practice recommendations.

10. International Users

The Website is intended primarily for users in the United States and Canada. If you access our services from outside these regions, please note that your personal information may be transferred to and processed in the U.S. or Canada. By using the Website, you consent to the transfer of your information in accordance with this Privacy Policy.
